Ecommerce Alphabet Soup QUIZ
January 2, 2025
It’s hard to follow a conversation when you are not familiar with the acronyms that are being referenced.
Have you had a conversation with a person who works in the eCommerce Industry lately? We have these conversations all the time, and often refer to them as “Alphabet Soup,” because of the volume of acronyms used. In our Podcast Studio in Orange County, Jason Lavin sat down with Mic Michniewicz, our Chief Architect, to discuss all things ecommerce.
QUIZ YOURSELF: Here are the acronyms that came up: Magento 1, 1.9x, Magento 2, SKUs, PIM, MultiChannel, RESTful APIs, GraphQL, ERP, CDP, SSO, DAM, CCPA, and last but not least… GDPR.
OMG, IMO that might be TMI.
Yes, this is serious alphabet soup.
You can watch the podcast Use PIMCORE for PIM to get all the answers.
And below is the answer key [and timeline when it’s mentioned]:
[2:35] – Magento 1, 1.9x, Magento 2
Refers to the popular open-source eCommerce platform: Magento.
This conversation illustrates that there’s not an “upgrade path” from M1 to M2 – rather Magento 2 is a complete rework of Magento 1.
[3:45] – SKUs, PIM, MultiChannel
Refers to “moving 1M SKUs” – A SKU, or stock keeping unit, a standard alphanumeric code that businesses use to identify and track products in their inventory and used for ecommerce. These SKUs are organized in a PIM (Product Information Management) software program. A PIM is a specially designed piece of software with the specific purpose of managing your product information. Note: in this case study, we use Pimcore for the PIM. MultiChannel refers to all of the different places (e.g. marketplaces) that use the data.
[6:30] -RESTful APIs, GraphQL, ERP,
Refers to tools that serve as a gateway to get to your data (in this case the data stored in the PIM). For the record: RESTful APIs means Representational State Transfer Application Programming Interface and the “QL” in GraphQL is query language. ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) is software that helps companies manage their core business.
[11:00] CDP, SSO
Refers to a customer data platform. Different from a PIM (which stores your product data), CDP stores your customer data. SSO means “single sign on” that allows you to log into multiple platforms with one username/password. If a business operates different websites or applications, a CDP ensures that customer data is synchronized across all platforms. This is particularly useful when businesses offer premium content or services across distinct platforms but want to provide a unified experience for their customers.
[12:30] DAM, CCPA, GDPR
Refers to customer data and privacy rules. DAM means Digital Asset Management. CCPA means California Consumer Privacy Act, which refers to a state statute intended to enhance privacy rights and consumer protection for residents of California, USA. You can learn more about CCPA on their official website. Finally, GDPR refers to General Data Protection Regulation, which is the legal framework that sets guidelines for the collection and processing of personal data from individuals who live in the European Union (EU)
OK… that’s it – how did you do?
